Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has publicly criticized the makers of Ram Charan starrer Game Changer, for allegedly inflating the movie’s box office collections, labelling the situation as a fraud. Varma expressed his concerns regarding the significant discrepancies between the box office figures claimed by the producers and those reported by trade sources.

Ram Gopal Varma calls Ram Charan starrer Game Changer’s box office fruad

On Monday evening, Varma took to X (formerly Twitter) to voice his scepticism, saying, “If @ssrajamouli and @SukumarWritings skyrocketed Telugu cinema in real-time collections into fantastically stratospheric heights, sending legitimate shock waves into Bollywood, the people behind Game Changer succeeded in proving that the south is much more FANTASTIC in being a FRAUD.”

He further questioned the authenticity of the reported box office figures, stating, “I truly don’t know who’s behind this highly humiliating disgrace of undermining the extraordinary achievements of the south, thanks to films like Baahubali, RRR, KGF 2, and Kantara. All of their achievements will now be in doubt because of Game Changer claims.”

Ram Gopal Varma on producer & budget

While Varma cleared producer Dil Raju of any wrongdoing, he expressed confusion about who might be responsible for these alleged inaccuracies. He remarked, “I don’t know who’s behind these unbelievably naive lies, but it can’t be producer Dil Raju because he is a truly grounded realist and incapable of the fraud that is being committed.”

According to the producers, Game Changer earned Rs 186 crores on its opening day, January 10, which, if accurate, would position it as the fourth-best opening Indian film ever, trailing only Pushpa 2, Baahubali 2, and RRR. However, trade sources reported a much lower opening, with figures under Rs 100 crore, including estimates as low as Rs 80 crore from Sacnilk.

Varma also expressed doubts about the film’s reported budget, tweeting, “If Game Changer cost Rs 450 crore, then RRR with its extraordinary visual appeal should have cost Rs 4,500 crores. If Game Changer’s first-day collections are Rs 186 crore, then Pushpa 2 collections should have been Rs 1,860 crore. The point is that the fundamental requirement of TRUTH is that it should sound BELIEVABLE, and in the context of Game Changer, a LIE should sound even more BELIEVABLE.”
